roundup [Jul. 6th, 2009|04:20 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]

  • I only recently learned that the internet idiom om nom nom nom is a transliteration of the Cookie Monster eating.
  • At the store I saw a cereal box with an offer for a Star Trek t-shirt, with the insignia over the heart. The one illustrated was red. Who would want a red one?
  • The problem with Men in Black II isn't that Will Smith couldn't carry a movie by himself without Tommy Lee Jones, cuz we all know he can. The problem was Agent K can't carry a Men in Black movie without Agent J. Unfortunately this is exactly the sort of thing that you can't know until you try it once.
  • Weird Al's Eat It video is artistry in slapstick, but there's none funnier than Chevy Chase's You Can Call Me Al.
  • [On my flist I was asked where my logon name comes from.] When I was a freshman at Northwestern I had a red scarf my mother had given me that I wore all the time. Sometimes my dorm buddies would call me Scarfman. One night late in the last quarter, on one of our excursions to the pizza place that didn't card, I lost it. It was replaced successively by handmade red scarves by my best friend from high school, my first lover, and my last lover (twenty-two year wedding anniversary next October).
In May of 1995 when my mother recommended the ISP in my town as the best deal she'd seen listed anywhere for us to get online, and the system asked for a logon of up to eight letters, scarfman was what I thought of. It remains my first choice for logon names to this day, though I have been known to go with sc4rfm4n if I must.
  • Torchwood: Children of Earth is airing in the US two weeks after it airs in the UK. I must now decide whether to read the spoilers on my flist.

random thoughts while recovering [Jun. 22nd, 2009|06:08 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , ]

Reading my liveblogged insomnia post, [info]qtrhorserider said, "This is why you should be on Twitter."

I can never remember all three of the Top Gear guys' names at once.

Any "Top [Number Greater Than Three] Most [Quality Adjective] TV Episodes of All Time" list that hasn't any M*A*S*H on it is automatically wrong.

The AKOTAS newspost under tomorrow's cartoon reads, "Some of these are so thoroughly fanfiction with the names changed that I may have to reedit the art and reprint them when The Hero of Three Faces comes off its summer hiatus."

The third Doctor/Peri story has had all its scenes drafted. It will go up on the betareader filter soon, and be generally available, and crossposted, a minimum of 72 hours after that.

Today I transferred from DVR to DVD, with the DVD recorder we got ourselves for Christmas or something, the Colbert Reports from the week he was in Iraq and the Top Gear episodes with the southern US road trip (I specify "southern US" because I remember a California episode too) and with the homebuilt stretch limos. I'm still teaching myself how to use the recorder and I did these for practice - for instance, the Colbert Report disc doesn't have a disc title; and the disc I made the other day with the CNN inauguration coverage doesn't have disc or track titles, but that's all right because there was only one track. And I started out intending to take the commercials out but gave up. But that's all right because these are really scratch recordings that [info]qtrhorserider wanted to show to [info]rox_law; if they were on videotape, they'd be taped over once viewed again. (Perhaps we should invest in a few DVD-RWs.) By the time I get to my taped-off-PBS Doctor Who collection, I'm going to want to be good at this. Today's useful revelations from thumbing through the manual: how to set the menu track thumbnails, and there appear to be different recording quality levels which presumably mean, as with videotape, you can get more or less time onto the same disc. (<-- This is why I'm not on Twitter.)

Sci Fi Saturday movie [May. 30th, 2009|09:42 pm]

James Callis (BSG) as Merlin in Book of Beasts (or Merlin and the Book of Beasts according to IMDb, which says it's still in production). Set after the fall of Camelot; the band of heroes is Galahad, Galahad's son (!!), Tristram's son Tristram and Arthur & Guenevere's daughter. Worth it for this exchange:

MORDRED: Where is the sword thrown into the lake?!
MERLIN: I hid it.
MORDRED: You hid the sword?
MERLIN: I hid the lake.

From a post at [info]spock_uhura asking what we'd like to see for the pairing in the next movie:

What would I like to see? I'd like to see any juicy, well-written storyline that doesn't break them up or threaten to break them up. After nearly half a century as a screen drama consumer, I'm getting tired of regular characters in a series failing at all relationships so that they're available, just to fail at the next relationship too. I want to see them overcome any adversity, like the Clancys on Ghost Whisperer and the DuBoises on Medium (and what's with that? Does a couple have to have supernatural powers to stay together, on tv?).

Or the Scavos on Desperate Housewives! Easy on the eyes as Teri Hatcher is, Lynette and Tom are what keep me watching that show.

Or Lily and Marshall.

Answering the pepperoni [Apr. 25th, 2009|11:18 am]

I dreamed I was doing a road trip, by myself, [info]qtrhorserider wasn't there. Except I kept running into Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, who were going to the same place as I but weren't traveling together because they'd had a big fight. Finally they were at least both in my car together, even if they weren't speaking. In fact Lorelai was driving. We got to this restaurant/rest stop/attraction sort of place, and they asked me to leave them alone, and after a minute they were getting along again and insisting I try this game in the place's video arcade which seemed to me to be a modernised Burger Time, and then I was woken up.

Next, home picturephones [Apr. 9th, 2009|09:29 pm]

We put on Tuesday's Fringe from the DVR and the first seven minutes were runover from American Idol live. I asked [info]qtrhorserider, "Do you want to risk watching a Fringe recording that's missing the last seven minutes?" But we decided to go for it. It was the one when the feral child gives Olivia hints for tracking down the serial killer and, sure enough, our DVR had stopped recording just when the feds were about to open the killer's van and discover his latest victim.

So [info]qtrhorserider said, "We should look for it at Hulu or somewhere."

So while the DVR played the first act of Tuesday's Daily Show, I logged onto Hulu.com, created an account, and found the episode; and, pausing Jon Stewart during the commerical break, we watched the end of Fringe.

I love living in the future.

Dollhouse [Mar. 22nd, 2009|07:20 pm]
[Tags|, ]

scarfmom noted the other week that a problem with Dollhouse is that you're supposed to get invested in the protagonist as a character but Echo doesn't have any lasting character. It occurred to me this week that, despite billing, Echo isn't the protagonist of Dollhouse - Ballard is.

I never knew Roger Zelazny's Last Defender of Camelot had been made into an 80s Twilight Zone episode, but I saw on a mailing list that it's airing on the Chiller cable network at 5 am EST Tuesday morning.

GARP [Dec. 31st, 2008|05:09 pm]

I think I've GARPed this cartoon before. (The only cartoon I'm sure I've GARPed twice is the Indiana Jones/Space Odyssey crossover.) This one's from the earliest days of triangle fanfiction, before I'd decided which brush to use for eyes and decided that comic strip triangles didn't need to be as minimalist as animated triangles.
